Input Methods

There are a lot of different input methods available all based on their own insights on how to make it easier or faster to input. There are input methods who are based on the pronounciation, character structre, characterset and a combination of pronounciation and character structure.
An easier to learn input method uses only 26 keys (which matches the amount of western letters) so that numbers and symbols can still be accesed directly while using the input method. However it all comes down to personal preference, how you learned the language and how fast you want/need to type.

Pronounciation based

(related: see also romanisation)

Structure based

These input methods are based on the structure of the character. They are more difficult to master (and because of that easly to forget) but one doesn't need to know the pronounciation to input a character.

Combination pronounciation - structure

Direct input

These input methods use the number assigned in the characterset to the character. A good online resource is 中文輸入法世界 (Chinese)
There are several ways on how input methods work (on-the-spot, over-the-spot, off-the-spot, and root-window). For a comprehensive explanation check following link : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/intl/input-method-spec.html
